| DEPRESSION:
THE PARALYZING FORCE I believe that depression is one of the worst illnesses to hit the planet - and if you don't agree, I invite you to consider the following: - While less than eight percent of the world's population lives in the E.U., we consume more than 35% of the world's cocaine. Could it be that drug use has flourished as an imagined antidote against depression? - What we spend on alcohol equals the entire E.U.'s defence spending. There's nothing like a good ol' gin and tonic when you're feeling down. - 15 million Europeans are diagnosed each year as clinically depressed. That's more than the entire population of Scandinavia. - More than 500 million euros worth of prescriptions are written for the anti-depressant drug, Prozac. Doesn't this alone say it all? The truth of the matter is that if you are not suffering from chemical depression, you are creating your own depressive state. Most people don't like to hear this, just as people with weight to lose don't want to hear that most people are over-fat because they eat too much fat and don't exercise. Today genetics are blamed for everything from high cholesterol levels to depression. Depression is caused mainly by focusing on what is not working in your life instead of what is. It's amazing how we always seem to see the glass "half-empty". If you focus on anything negative for long enough, you can work yourself into a debilitating depression, at which point even washing the dishes becomes a major undertaking! Unfortunately, many people around the world find themselves in this state, seeing no light at the end of the tunnel. If you are presently dealing with on-going depression, you might well ask, "is there hope?" Of course there is! You need to first understand that you can change your mood in an instant if you want to. This may seem simplistic, but the fact is that the quickest, easiest and most powerful way to deal with any emotion is to remember a time when you felt a similar emotion and remember that you successfully dealt with it in the past. It is very rare to find a person who has been depressed and wasn't able to pull out of it at least once. If you've dealt with it in the past, then surely you can deal with it again successfully. Ask yourself: "how did I pull out of this depression before?" Did you go for a run? Called an uplifting friend? The truth is if whatever you did in the past worked, then by repeating the process, you should achieve the same positive result. More |
